Community Service

Fall 2008 Semester

The Objective:

Community service is basically defined as "services volunteered by individuals or an organization (that's us!) to benefit a community or its institutions."

The Guidelines (a.k.a the rules, or else no money for us):

  • We may not raise money for an organization and then donate it.
  • We may not tag along on a walk-a-thon.
  • We may not ride the coat-tails of an already established school community service event, period.
  • We can collaborate with other clubs... but those big named clubs got this stuff done months ago.
  • We may not tailor our event for the students at SPC or the SPC community... (we must truly be men and women for others and do work for the community... hence the term community service) so, no, we cannot have a presentation for the campus).
  • At least 50% of our members must attend said community service event. Since the guidelines insist that a club needs a minimum of ten members to be considered a real club, at least five people should attend. Please be forewarned that if you want to take the easy way out an say we only have ten members, that later effects our budget. That's why L.A.S.O and the B.A.C get so much money every year... they have tons of members!
  • If another club is using a certain corporation, we may not use it. The school does not want to appear to be using only one specific coporation/company/ect.
  • In the same instance, if one club has already taken a certain project, we may not duplicate it. This is where planning ahead and taking dibs before the other clubs is important. This is a good example of where collaboration comes in to play... if you really want to do the project and the other club is willing to split the credit, it can happen. Don't get your hopes up though.

What was decided on:

  • We will be renting a SPC van and driving to Union City High School (formerly known as Emerson High School) to give a presentation on radio and why they should consider a career in radio broadcasting. [If we ended up bringing the students to our station like we originally wanted to, we would have tons of back-and-forth with principals, parents and legal repercussions in the worst case scenario of something happening medically while these (underage) kids are on our watch. We are in talks with Mrs. Newborn (Beatriz in Community Service) about getting this all settled for us some time in the first week of December.

What we need:

  • A driver who is cleared with the school (a.k.a DOM... convince him, people!) to drive to SPC Van
  • The SPC Van to be rented (paper work must be filled)
  • At least half of the WSPC Radio crew to volunteer... different areas of expertise will be needed.

    - Get personal: Why do you enjoy radio broadcasting?

  • In addition to volunteers, enthusiastic volunteers (no one likes a joy kill).
  • People to help create a poster board and/or PowerPoint presentation.
  • A good public speaker. (Stephanie, maybe? I love hearing her speak =D)

The details:

  • Coming soon... as soon as I get them, as a matter of fact.

No, seriously... you can be one of the speakers if you wish. You made me kind of... proud... when you were speaking at the open house presentation.

Okay, now... get to the sangwich making, meng.
